Renaissance™ (formerly Roma Plastilina) sulfur-based modeling clay has been used by fine art sculptors since the 1950’s.

Rissance™ is a premium non-drying sulfur-based modeling clay series utilized by sculptors around the world to create highly detailed figures, larger statuary, architectural elements, & relief sculpture. Available in Soft, Medium & Hard the Renaissance™ series offers an extensive hardness range to better support a multitude of sculpting & modeling techniques.

Working with the Clay
Renaissance™ is not self-supporting so an armature will need to be constructed for figurative work. Traditional wood, metal, plastic, & silicone clay tools are recommended for working with the clay. The high sulfur content of Renaissance™ produces a very “buttery,” texture & helps resist oxidation allowing the clay to remain pliable.

Smoothing the Clay
Clay Rake tools, Scrapers, Spreaders, & hand pressure are often used to smooth out the clay surface & make it uniform. Naphtha, clear mineral spirits, citrus-based solvents or 99% isopropyl alcohol brushed on the surface of the clay help to attain a smooth surface.

Softening the Clay
Renaissance™ Soft is generally used at room temperature 73°F/23°C.
Renaissance™ Medium and Hard are most often warmed to a temperature of 115°F/46°C to soften it. When clay returns to room temperature it also returns to the initial firmness. It is important to never overheat a sulfur-bearing clay as it can potentially burn the clay. Using a probe thermometer and observing the clay as it heats will also help to keep warming clay within temperature ranges.
Watch and monitor your clay temperatures closely, never leave them unattended. Heating equipment should not be set above the highest maximum temperature of the clay to prevent it from burning.
Note: Sulfur-Based clay will discolor clay warming equipment and can build up (crystalize) on the interior of clay warmers and industrial ovens over time.
! Microwaves are not recommended due to uneven heating and potential burning.

Clean up
Renaissance™ can be cleaned from tools & surfaces with Naphtha or 99% Isopropyl alcohol. Clay can bond to fabrics & stain clothing.

Unopened - stored at room temperature away from sunlight or sources of UV, it will have a shelf life of 2 years.
Opened - over time, clay exposed to air will oxidize and the surface may eventually dry out. Once opened, place clay in airtight container or wrap completely in plastic wrap and store away from sunlight or sources of UV.
